14 marzo no snacksIt's funny, I almost forgot the routine you have to follow after purchasing a bus ticket. You WOULD think, by buying a ticket from point A to point B, that by simply showing up at point A with your belongings and ticket the only real effort one would have to exert would be to sit for blank number of hours on said vehicle until reaching point B and de-boarding said vehicle. We arrived at stated bus departure point, Kao San Road- obviously nowhere for a bus to pull into and load with 80 passengers- at bus departure time, 7pm. We left Bangkok at 9, from some restaurant on some road after being lead, pied-piper style around the city picking up all the various passengers from all their various 'departure points.' This style of ticketing is also common in Laos, even more so with the time of the actual departure. They seem to have some sort of national time difference- I think it's about 2 hours. If you don't understand, an example would be this: a ticket for a bus leaving at 1:30 pm from your very own guesthouse (sounds ideal) means the bus leaves at 3:30 pm from another place. I'm not sure why they don't change the ads for the buses to compensate for this time difference, i'm sure it would make things a lot easier and provide everyone with an extra 2 hours of living on days when buses are involved....The language of the ads is also a little backwards and takes some experience to be able to decipher. "Air Conditioning" means "NO AIRCONDITIONING" and "Movies shown and complimentary snacks provided" Means "NO MOVIES NO TV NO SNACKS............but hey....its all part of the bloody fun of it
Laos is lovely, despite the efforts of getting here. We are in Van Vieng. Did the tubing thing, paid 3bucks to hire a tube and be tuk-tuk'd up the river 30mins. Spent 4hours cruising down the river, stopping at a few bars along the way. Bought a BeerLaos off a boy aged about 8 who offered me a joint and a shot of his personal bottle of vodka. At one place i got brave and climbed a 25ft platform to grab hold of a rope swing, knees shaking, with an audience of Laos people that had obviously grown up on the banks of the river doing rope swings since age 2. I proceeded to face-dive very elegantly into the water when my hands slipped off the handle. Dont know what hurt more: my face or my pride.
Every restaurant and guesthouse one the one strip of dirt road that is Van Vieng plays Friends. Dont know who or what started this trend.
The food here is Shite. Absolute Shite. I'm not even kidding.
Going back to Vientienne the day after tomorrow. As for today maybe theres a rerun of the one where phoebe changes her name to princess bananahammock.
